« Ernest loved his psychotherapist job. Day after day, his patients invited him into the most secret corners of their lives. Day after day, he reassured them , cared for them , relieved their pain. »
Yalom, I. (1996). Mensonges sur le divan, p.11
Psychotherapy is a meeting matter first, then it’s about expertise. In my opinion, patient and therapist are travel companions who commit to each other on a complicated and intimate but gratifying road.
Honesty and mutual confidence are essential to the success of therapy, measured by the capacity to learn about oneself to promote growth and self fulfillment.
Through this triptych I wanted to represent the key stages of psychotherapy with the prevailing feeling before starting the process, what we live for and contributions that we withdraw after of the process. It is a personal and non-exhaustive vision that I hope will echo…
« Change isn’t becoming someone else, it’s knowing who we are, and accepting it”, by modulating certain facets of our personality regardless to the context in which we evolve and via a path suited to our possibilities. »
« Bad habits of the mind can’t be totally suppressed, but it is possible to add new habits and get them to become irresistible. People can’t be changed radically, but you can just point at a new path and then help them with the will to walk it. »
Gounelle, L.(2010), Les Dieux voyagent toujours incognito, p.213
Systemic psychotherapy considers that a person suffering, whatever his/her problems, is part of a complex interpersonal system. The total of the system represents way more than the simple sum of the individuals in the system.
The system is organized with its own rules and its own codes of communication. Sometimes the interactions become problematic and the visible symptoms are the expression of a more global dysfunction. The person who expresses the symptom is not responsible, it is the whole system (family, social environments, professional context) which is disturbed and suffering.
The goal is to identify the problem and cure the interactions. By giving a meaning to the dysfunctional behaviors and by identifying their function, a new balance can be created were these behaviors become useless.
In systemic, we do not cure the person but his way of being in relationship with its context, of perceiving its environment. Relational games are analyzed to suggest other less demanding and more balancing.
